Let me tell you about my recent winter vacation to the Sonnenalp Resort in Germany. Picture this: snow-covered peaks, crackling fireplaces, and the ultimate blend of spa indulgence and ski adventure. It was the perfect January getaway!
I took a little trip back to my German roots this January, gathering some family for a 3-day stay at the Sonnenalp Resort. It’s nestled in the Bavarian Alps, and let me tell you, it’s the epitome of an alpine spa resort. We came for a mix of skiing and spa relaxation, and Sonnenalp delivered on all fronts. It’s a top rated spa hotel with all that it entails.

The Sonnenalp Experience: What I Loved
- The Spa: Wow. Just wow. The spa is expansive, a true haven. We spent hours hopping between the indoor and outdoor pools – the heated outdoor one with mountain views was my personal favorite (as they usually are) They had a wide range of treatments, but I particularly enjoyed the Alpine Herbal Massage, which was perfect after a day on the slopes. They also had different saunas and steam baths.
- The Rooms: We stayed in a junior suite, and it was incredibly spacious and comfortable. The alpine-chic décor was spot-on, and the views were breathtaking. The beds were incredibly comfortable.
- The Food: The culinary experience was exceptional. We dined at the Gourmetrestaurant Silberdistel one night, and it was a truly special experience. The food was exquisite, and the service was impeccable. Even the regular hotel restaurants offered high quality food.
- The Skiing: The resort is conveniently located near several ski areas. We spent most of our time at the nearby Garmisch-Classic area, which offered a variety of slopes for all skill levels. It was very easy to get there by car.
- Electric Car Charging: As we went with my brothers electric car, We were very happy to see a good number of charging stations near the hotel. It made the trip very convenient.

Other activities to do nearby
- We took a scenic walk through the charming small town of Sonthofen which is just a few minutes by car from the hotel. It’s a picturesque Bavarian village with traditional architecture.
- We also visited a local Christmas market, which was still open in early January. It was a delightful experience with traditional crafts and treats like Glühwein.
- Breitachklamm: A stunning gorge that’s accessible year-round. In winter, it’s particularly magical with frozen waterfalls and ice formations.
- Neuschwanstein Castle: While a bit of a drive (about an hour), this iconic fairy-tale castle is a must-see.

Must-Dos at Sonnenalp:
- Indulge in a spa treatment after a day of skiing if you go there in the winter time. There are plenty of treatments and massages along with medical spa.
