Are you on the hunt for the ideal weekend spa getaway in Europe?

I absolutely love discovering new and amazing spa spots, and today I’m excited to share some insights about a destination that’s not only super convenient for a relaxing spa retreat—especially for those of us in Sweden—but also incredibly budget-friendly. Let me introduce you to Poland’s Tri-City: Gdańsk, Gdynia, and Sopot! I’ve come to realize just how much of a hidden gem this area is for a spa weekend in Poland, and it’s high time more people caught on. You’ll find fantastic value for your money, and getting there is a breeze!

Walking through centuries of history in Gdańsk’s magnificent Old Town. Painstakingly rebuilt after WWII, its Hanseatic spirit lives on in the grand merchant houses, the imposing St. Mary’s Church, and the iconic Neptune Fountain. A truly inspiring place

Why the Tri-City for a Spa Trip?

What makes the Tri-City (Trójmiasto in Polish) so special is the combination of three cities with distinctly different characters, located close together along the Baltic Sea coast:

  • Gdańsk: The historic pearl with Hanseatic roots. The city has an incredibly beautiful, rebuilt Old Town (Stare Miasto) with colourful facades, cozy alleys, and impressive churches. There’s also significant modern history linked to Solidarity and World War II. Gdańsk is also famous for amber!
  • Sopot: Poland’s answer to the Riviera! This is the country’s most famous seaside resort, renowned for its long sandy beach, vibrant nightlife, and especially its iconic wooden pier – the Molo – which is the longest in Europe. It has more flair and a holiday feel. Perfect for a spa Sopot by the sea.
  • Gdynia: The modern port city that emerged rapidly between the wars. Here you’ll find interesting modernist architecture, a bustling harbour, exciting museum ships, and a popular aquarium.

The best part is that the cities are connected by the SKM commuter train, making it super easy (and cheap!) to travel between them and experience everything the Tri-City has to offer during a single trip.

The Spa Scene and Other Things to Do

In the Tri-City area, you’ll mainly find modern spa hotels Poland, often of a high standard with well-designed spa areas. Many hotels, especially in Sopot, are close to the beach, and some offer sea views. You can expect nice pool areas, a good selection of saunas (Poles enjoy saunas too!), and professional treatments at prices that are often significantly lower than in Sweden. There’s everything from luxurious five-star facilities to more affordable options.

When you’re not relaxing at the spa, there’s plenty to see and do:

  • Gdańsk: Wander along Długi Targ (Long Market) in the Old Town, see the Neptune Fountain, visit St. Mary’s Church (one of the largest brick churches in the world), learn about modern history at the European Solidarity Centre or the Museum of the Second World War. Don’t miss looking for amber jewellery!
  • Sopot: Stroll out onto the famous wooden pier (Molo), enjoy the sun on the wide sandy beach, walk along the Monte Cassino pedestrian street (Monciak) with its cafes and bars.
  • Gdynia: Visit the Aquarium, climb aboard the museum ships ORP Błyskawica (WWII destroyer) and Dar Pomorza (tall ship), explore the harbour.

Golden sands stretch endlessly, inviting you to soak in the beauty! Sopot Beach truly is the heart of Poland’s beloved seaside getaway, and it’s easy to see why. It’s the perfect spot for sunbathing, taking leisurely strolls along the Baltic Sea, and soaking up those delightful summer vibes ☀️

Practical Travel Tips

  • Best time to visit? Summer (June-August) is perfect for beach life in Sopot and warm weather, but it’s also the busiest time. Spring (May) and Autumn (September) are ideal for a weekend trip with more pleasant temperatures for sightseeing and spa visits, and fewer crowds. Winter also works well for a cozy spa trip, perhaps combined with the Christmas market in Gdańsk.
  • Getting There (from Sweden): Incredibly easy! Direct flights to Gdańsk (GDN) operate from several Swedish airports (Arlanda, Skavsta, Landvetter etc.) with airlines like Wizz Air, Ryanair, and SAS. The flight time is only about 1-1.5 hours. Another nice option is the Stena Line ferry from Karlskrona to Gdynia, perfect if you want a slightly longer journey or to bring your car. For visitors from further afield, Gdańsk (GDN) airport has connections to many European cities.
  • Currency & Price Level: The currency is the Polish Złoty (PLN). Generally, Poland is much cheaper than Sweden or Western Europe. Expect hotels, restaurant meals, taxis, and even spa treatments to cost significantly less – often you can get luxury for a fraction of the price back home! Perfect for a budget-friendly spa weekend.
  • Language: Polish is the official language, but English works very well in hotels, restaurants, and shops in tourist areas.
