I’m Vincent, a digital nomad and brand designer. For ten years, I’ve traveled, working and seeking the world’s most luxurious spa resorts.

Hi everyone! This is probably one of the weirder treatments you can get at a spa (although there are some that outclass this one. Articles about those are yet to come). But is it really that weird? I raised an eyebrow at “Vinotherapy” a couple of years ago when i first heard of it. Grapes? For beauty? Sounded a bit…fruity. But, as I’ve learned, sometimes the best surprises come from stepping outside your comfort zone.

I’ll admit, the idea of slathering myself in grape extracts wasn’t exactly my vision of luxury. But after many different spa experiences around the world, you become more and more open to new things. Nuff said. what is this?

What is Vinotherapy?

Vinotherapy, in essence, is the use of grape byproducts – think grape seeds, skins, and pulp – for their antioxidant and therapeutic properties. It’s not just about fancy facials; it’s a holistic approach to wellness that taps into the natural power of grapes.

A bit of Vinotherapy history

The concept isn’t entirely new. The French, particularly in the Bordeaux region, have long recognized the benefits of grape extracts. But it was Mathilde Cathiard-Thomas, co-founder of the Caudalie skincare brand, who really brought Vinotherapy into the spa world in the 1990s.

Health Benefits of Vinotherapy

  • Antioxidant Power: Grapes are packed with polyphenols, which fight free radicals and slow down aging.
  • Improved Circulation: Grape seed extracts can boost blood flow, leaving your skin glowing.
  • Skin Hydration: Grape seed oil is a natural moisturizer, leaving skin soft and supple.
  • Cellular Regeneration: Vinotherapy can stimulate collagen and elastin production, promoting firmer skin.
  • Muscle Relaxation: Grape-based massages can ease tension and soothe sore muscles.

My Personal Experience

I opted for a grape seed body scrub and a red wine barrel bath. The scrub was invigorating, and the bath? Surprisingly relaxing. My skin felt incredibly smooth, and I swear I looked a few years younger, if that’s even possible 😉 The whole experience was grounding and refreshing.

Where in the World?

Vinotherapy isn’t very common, but most popular in:

  • France: Especially in the Bordeaux and Champagne regions.
  • Italy: Tuscany and other wine-producing areas.
  • Spain: Rioja and other regions with vineyards.
  • Argentina: Mendoza is known for its vinotherapy spas.
  • USA: California’s Napa Valley is also starting to offer these treatments.

Q&A

  • Q: Does it smell strongly of wine? Some treatments have a subtle grape scent, but it’s not overpowering.

  • Q: Are the results long-lasting? Regular Vinotherapy treatments can contribute to long-term skin health.
  • Q: Is it only for women? Absolutely not, i did it, did’nt I? Men can also benefit from Vinotherapy treatments.
